At the heart of this initiative is Mona, a robot designed to improve understanding of how clients experience physical interaction during assessments.
Occupational therapists often work with individuals who may have physical, cognitive, or communication challenges. Whether assessing mobility, offering support during rehabilitation, or recommending adaptations for a home environment, touch is an essential but complex part of their work. Mona the robot has become a game-changer in helping therapists refine their techniques to better serve their clients.
Meet Mona: A Training Tool with Human-Like Responses
Mona is no ordinary robot. She has been programmed to mimic human characteristics and reactions, including signs of discomfort. For instance, if she is moved too firmly, Mona recoils and emits a sound resembling pain, much like a human wincing. Her physical resistance and joint movements simulate real-life scenarios, making her an invaluable tool for training occupational therapists.
Tim Bearder, cabinet member for adult social care, highlighted the importance of this cutting-edge technology:
“The technology gives our therapists greater confidence in how they carry out their vital work.”
The robot can assess movement in areas like the knees and hips, allowing therapists to practice their techniques in a safe, controlled environment before applying them with real clients.
Why This Matters: The Nuances of Touch
The study, conducted as part of the Embodied Intelligence programme, focuses on how subtle cues like bodily tension or expressions of pain can influence the therapist-client relationship. Dr. Minna Nygren, a researcher from UCL, explained:
“If we have a client who is non-verbal, there is a lot going on in bodily communication in terms of tension and expressions of pain. That would be a cue for therapists to shift their way of touching.”
For therapists, understanding these small but significant signals is critical. Touch, while often calming and reassuring, can sometimes feel invasive or agitating for certain individuals, especially those with conditions like dementia or arthritis. Mona allows therapists to reflect on their approach, ensuring they are providing comfort rather than discomfort during assessments.

Ruth Alecock, an occupational therapist involved in the project, shared how impactful the experience has been:
“This project has enabled me to really reflect on that and get more of an insight into what the person is feeling that we are assessing.”
By training with Mona, therapists can fine-tune their skills, develop greater empathy, and ensure their touch is appropriate and beneficial for each individual client. These insights are particularly valuable when working with clients who may not be able to communicate verbally.
